To kick off this school year, students created TWO collaborative art projects: one to share with other students from across the United States, and the other to launch our year at Crossroads. The first project is with MY AMERICA, a nationwide, youth-driven art and civic engagement campaign that will honor our past, reflect on our present, and inspire our future in celebration of our country’s 250th birthday! Through artistic expression, civic action, and public commemoration, MY AMERICA empowers young people across all U.S. states and territories to reflect on what unity, democracy, and being an American means today by creating a large mosaic of an American flag made up of thousands of individual tiles with messages, drawings, and poems. Next month we will begin assembling the 130,000 fabric tiles, from 1,900 schools and classrooms, into a mosaic of the American Flag. This historic (and record-setting) tribute from our youth to our nation’s 250th will be unveiled in Boston, MA this December. Upon its completion, the flag mosaic is expected to be 150 feet long by 80 feet wide, or half the size of a football field!
MY AMERICA is a movement of purpose and participation. It demonstrates that youth voices still shape the direction of our democracy, just as they did in 1776. It reminds us that the American story is ongoing, and that the next chapter will be written by those who believe in the ideals that bind us together.

The second school-wide collaborative involves our rays of sunshine. Each student contributed a sun ray for our mural in Bancroft, and together these rays will stand for our hopes and dreams and core virtues for the new school year. Students were introduced to the symbolism of the sun across history, cultures, religions, and rituals, and to a range of artists and styles drawing upon the sun as inspiration. Together, we all shine bright this year!
