Welcome back, families! It is so wonderful to see our hallways buzzing with life once again. Whether your child is a familiar face returning to our community or a brand-new student stepping into our school for the very first time, please know that you belong here, and we are incredibly grateful to partner with you this school year.

From the Garone Zone, the school counseling office, our focus during these first few weeks is helping every single child feel a deep sense of safety, welcome, and connection.

The Power of “Grounding” in New Routines

Adjusting to a new school year is a massive transition. Children are navigating countless new variables all at once: a new grade, unfamiliar classrooms, different teaching styles, and evolving social dynamics. Becoming grounded in the new routines of the school day takes time and intentionality.

It is important to remember that transitions look different for every single child. Some students jump right in with ease, while others need a quieter, more gradual pace to find their footing. Both paths are completely normal.

Navigating the “Early-Week Fatigue”

If you have noticed your child crashing on the couch the moment they get home, you are not alone! The first few weeks of school bring a unique kind of physical and mental exhaustion. Moving from the flexible freedom of summer back to the rigid structure, prolonged focus, and length of the school day requires a lot of energy. A simple reframe for this period is to prioritize rest, lower our evening expectations, and give their nervous systems extra time to process the day they just had.

Red Flags for Parents to Watch For

While initial fatigue and a little bit of back-to-school jitters are standard, sometimes the stress of transition runs a little deeper. Please keep an eye out for these patterns if they persist past the first few weeks:

  • Frequent Physical Complaints: Regular morning stomachaches, headaches, or nausea that magically disappear over the weekend or once the school day is underway.
  • The After-School Meltdown Pattern: Intense, disproportionate behavioral shifts, extreme irritability, or regular emotional breakdowns the exact moment they walk through the door at home.
  • Quiet Withdrawal: A sudden loss of interest in activities they usually enjoy, or a noticeable pull-back from talking about school or interacting with friends and family.

We Are Here to Support You

You do not have to navigate these transitions alone. Our school is a team, and we are entirely committed to making sure your child feels secure and supported. If you notice any of these red flags, or if you simply feel your child needs an extra layer of comfort as they settle in, please reach out. You can always connect directly with me in the Garone Zone, (ext. 143) your child’s classroom teacher, or our administration team.

Let’s take this journey one step, and one routine, at a time. Welcome to a fantastic new school year!
