This year our school-wide art collaboration focused on a variety of artists (past and present) using the symbolic butterfly. Below are a few artists that were highlighted to the students. These artists were chosen because of their wonderful connections to art, poetry, culture, science, math, and beyond.

  • Maria Sibylla Merian
  • Vincent Van Gogh
  • Damien Hirst
  • Vadim Zaritsky
  • M.C. Escher
  • Andy Warhol
  • Japanese Art
  • Salvador Dali
  • David Kracov

Taking inspiration from what they had learned from these artists, our K-8 students got to work on their own butterfly pieces. Students were tasked to create a design that incorporated their name or initials creatively into the design, include a Core Virtue word (or two) and highlight some areas that interested them by using text, graphics, shape, line, pattern, or even symmetry into their final piece.

As they were completed, they “took flight’ and were installed on the bulletin board here in Bancroft. The butterfly is the symbol of metamorphosis and transformation. The symbol of new life, letting go of old cycles and finding your true inner expression. The butterfly calls you to expand your awareness, spread your wings and call forth your inner joy.

“Happiness is like a butterfly, the more you chase it, the more it will evade you, but if you notice the other things around you, it will gently come and sit on your shoulder.” ― Henry David Thoreau
