Introduction to Mandarin Chinese Language and Culture
This class will introduce students to basic Mandarin Chinese and Chinese culture. Students will develop basic speaking and listening skills, and some basic reading and writing ability. We want to students to enjoy learning Chinese language and culture, and therefore we will place a lot of emphasis on listening to stories, singing songs, and learning traditional crafts and games. We will review our lessons at the end of each class, and distribute an optional homework/review sheet for students to work on and study for the next class. Also, we will work on writing Chinese, which means that we will use the brush pen (the traditional pen in ancient China). We will also practice reading Chinese characters and watch Chinese movies to have students get to know more about Chinese stories and culture. We will also teach the students to how to use chopsticks, and try to make some traditional Chinese food at the end of year. If the weather cooperates, we will also go outside and play some Chinese games. We will celebrate the traditional fall holidays and compare them to those in America, too.
