Community Connections

Being a member of the Crossroads community is truly special. Our families extend throughout a thirty-mile radius, and come from many diverse backgrounds and experiences. Everything! The special events, plays, and celebration of holidays and birthdays have been wonderful to experience.
  3. With which historical figure/celebrity would you most enjoy being stuck in a ski lift?
George Washington Carver – prominent agricultural scientist, inventor, professor at Tuskegee University, and a humanitarian. So that might turn into a tasty stew or soup (wonderful with gourmet purple potatoes, wild rice, baby carrots, celery and kale) or the makings of a Taco Tuesday, the latter being a favorite for our children.
  6. Baseball players have a “walk up” song that is played when they come to the plate – what would your “walk up” song be when you enter a room?

Our family friend, Scotty Harris, believed Crossroads would be an excellent opportunity for our children. 2. What have you enjoyed most about the Crossroads community?
We appreciate the dedication teachers and faculty have provided during this challenging year. Our kids were welcomed into their classrooms and have enjoyed making new friends.

Our children love The Greatest by Sia.
  7. What are you most grateful for?
We are grateful our family has remained healthy and active over the past year.
Missy and Alden Smith, Parents of: Ellicott (Ella) in sixth grade, Alden in fourth grade, Henry Atticus in Kindergarten.
  1. How long have you been a Crossroads family and what brought you here?
This is our second year at Crossroads. We were drawn to the school’s commitment to instill a love of learning in the pursuit of excellence. We noticed this joy and passion for learning in students and teachers alike when we visited. This is what we hoped for in our children’s school.
  2. What have you enjoyed most about the Crossroads community?
Teachers going above and beyond to make school fun and joyful, and the way parents support these efforts. The Halloween tradition, though changed this year, is a great example of this energy. Although there was no haunted house this year, and there could have been an incredible one, there was a fantastic parade instead. I was lucky to get to pick up early that day, and watching each class parade safely around the field after school, dancing with their teachers down the middle of the field, class by class was amazing. I witnessed true fun and joy!We also love the way each class has a parent volunteer to coordinate with the teacher to add to special events and occasions. I also love the ways families honor the teachers and students for their hard work and achievements.
  3. With which historical figure/celebrity would you most enjoy being stuck on a ski lift?
Missy: I would not mind finding Billy Collins in the line. I love poetry and would be more than over the moon to have those minutes in the line and or on the lift, in real life, to talk about in real time—the snow on the trees, or the way they go by with mountains in the distance. This would be dreamy. I also wouldn’t mind finding Ryan Miller there, who happens to be a Vermont resident and an incredible musician in the band Guster. He is quite a personality and I know I would have some great laughs on a ride up the lift with him. Alden would like to be stuck with the late songwriter Guy Clark, except he’d never be found on a ski lift.

  4. What was the last book you finished reading? Last movie you watched?  Last show you binged?
The Blue Zones Kitchen. 100 recipes to live to 100 By Dan Buettner.  Whale Day by Billy Collins.  Bisa Butler-Portraits Edited by Erica Warren. I read a lot of cookbooks, Books of Poetry, and Art books. I really love books. The last novels I ripped through were Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi and The Shame by Makenna Goodman. The last movie we watched was Harry Potter as a family. The last adult movie—Ben Hur (thank you 6th grade history). Alden and I are currently watching Jamestown.
  5. What is your go to lazy dinner option?
Anything marinated in my mom’s best friend, Sallie’s best marinade. Equal parts peanut oil, dijon mustard, and soy sauce. This week it was it boneless leg of lamb I had in the freezer. We grilled and seared it fast on Monday night. We also steamed some broccoli and squeezed a lemon on top, had some baked sweet potatoes, and a simple green salad dressed with equal parts lemon olive oil and peach vinegar. Very fast and easy dinner.
  6. Baseball players have a “walk up” song that is played when they come to the plate – what would your “walk up” song be when you enter a room?
I really like this question, maybe too much. So I will begin with choosing “Satellite” by Guster and keep on with the play by saying “Magic” by Coldplay or “Beast of Burden” by the Rolling Stones or “True Blue” by Madonna, and finally I’d say any one of Tom Petty’s gems of a ballad.
  7. What are you most grateful for?
The people and places we love so dearly, and all of our memories of them.
Courtney Johnson: Mom of Carter in fourth grade.
  1. How long have you been a Crossroads family and what brought you here?
Carter has been at Crossroads since Kindergarten!!! I have always believed in the importance of staying at one school so when I enrolled Carter in Kindergarten it was with the intention of him staying through 8th grade. 🙂
  2. What have you enjoyed most about the Crossroads community?
I have enjoyed the small connected community and I miss seeing everyone so so so much in person!!!!
  3. With which historical figure/celebrity would you most enjoy being stuck in a ski lift?
Oh man, I’m not sure really… I guess Katrín Davíðsdóttir who is a professional CrossFit athlete from Iceland, Australian bodybuilder Hattie Boyle,  or any child psychologist would be good too!
  4. What was the last book you finished reading? Last movie you watched? Last show you binged?
Honestly, I’m in a book funk, and have been for a few years; starting and not finishing books, which is unusual for me. I recently got Jodi Picoult’s newest book. I don’t watch any TV really, other than with Carter. He told me all his classmates had watched The Mandalorian so I said, okay we can try it. And I LOVED it and we watched all the seasons! The last movie I watched was Star Wars Episode V with Carter.

A whole can of tuna on a salad! 30 grams of protein real quick! I often eat this dinner!

Marnie and Terrence Welch: Parents of Isaac in fifth grade, Julia in third grade, Alexander in kindergarten, and Owen in eighth grade at Richmond Middle School.
  1. How long have you been a Crossroads family and what brought you here?
We joined the Crossroads community in the fall of 2020.  We were looking for a learning environment that was both challenging and nurturing.
  2. What have you enjoyed most about the Crossroads community?
Hands down, it has been the teachers and staff who have made the transition very easy despite the limitations of COVID.  From the beginning, the school has fostered increased intellectual curiosity in our children. During the first week of school back in August, Julia was telling Greek mythology stories at dinner, and Alexander was singing his Spanish songs. And right now, Isaac is practicing his lines from A Midsummer’s Night Dream.
  3. With which historical figure/celebrity would you most enjoy being stuck in a ski lift?
Owen: Clarence Darrow (a talented lawyer who was involved in thousands of cases) because he was one of the smartest lawyers ever.
Isaac: Isaac Newton because he’d love to ask him questions about physics.
Julia: Dwight D. Eisenhower because of his involvement in World War II and D-Day, and also Joan of Arc because of her leadership and bravery in France.
Alexander: Alexander von Humboldt (a famous explorer) because he visited amazing places and had a sweet first name to boot.
  4. What was the last book you finished reading? Last movie watched? Last show binged?
Our family is enjoying the series Wings of Fire by Tui T. Sutherland. We also finished reading The Hobbit by J.R.R.Tolkein to the younger two (and have started the Lord of the Rings), and then just watched the whole 3-part Hobbit movie by Peter Jackson.  I suppose we are into dragons now.
  5. What is your go to lazy dinner option?
Macaroni and Cheese for this time of year.  We often add bacon on top. https://www.splendidtable.org/story/2000/12/12/21st-century-mac-and-cheese
  6. Baseball players have a “walk up” song that is played when they come to the plate. What would your “walk up” song be when you enter a room?
Three of the kids voted for “Undefeated,” by The Score.  Isaac prefers “He’s a Pirate,” from the Pirates of the Caribbean.
  7. What are you most grateful for?
We are very grateful to live in the Upper Valley where our community and schools have taken the risk of COVID seriously, and schools have been able to be mainly in-person. Our children have been able to still participate in a variety of outdoor activities and some organized sports, theatre, and music in a safe manner throughout this pandemic. We both have been able to work at the hospital and provide care to patients during this difficult time, all while feeling supported by our departments and colleagues. Finally, our faith has kept us anchored throughout all these changes, and we’ve still been able to practice our faith, although differently.
Emilia and Chris Warrington: Parents of Caroline in Fourth Grade, Elle in Kindergarten, and Michael (age 2)
  1. How long have you been a Crossroads family and what brought you here?
Our daughters both started Crossroads in the fall of 2020.  We had considered enrolling Caroline several years ago, and in hindsight, feel fortunate to have had some familiarity with the campus and faculty as we considered it again last year. As our middle daughter reached kindergarten and the onset of the pandemic brought a lot of uncertainty, we ultimately felt that Crossroads would provide us with a sense of security and stability that we felt was necessary to ensure a successful school year for both of our daughters.  A change of this scale felt risky at the time, but after the first week (possibly even day) of school, it was clear that Crossroads was, and continues to be, the right choice for us.
  2. What have you enjoyed most about the Crossroads community?
This question is tricky to answer, mostly because we feel we have only scraped the surface with our first year being hindered by the pandemic. However, we can confidently say that both of our girls stepped in without missing a beat, and this is due entirely to their welcoming classmates and a staff that goes out of their way to make each child feel welcome, celebrated and valued.  We look forward to when normalcy resumes, as we anticipate our experience will be enhanced by the added opportunities for broader socialization amongst faculty, parents, and friends.
  3. With which historical figure/celebrity would you most enjoy being stuck on a ski lift?
    Emilia:
I’m a huge Coldplay fan, so I would love a few minutes to talk with Chris Martin.
    Chris:  Abraham Lincoln.|
  4. What was the last book you finished reading? Last movie you watched?  Last show you binged?
We have both enjoyed Richard Scarry’s “Best Word Book Ever” – as you can imagine, this took quite a long time with our two year old who wouldn’t allow us to skip one object.
Together, Chris and I also completed “The Ultimate Dog Encyclopedia” cover to cover with Elle. This was a major milestone that required a real division of parental labor.
“What the Moon Saw” was a great mother/daughter read with Caroline that sparked a lot of nice conversations for anyone looking for a relaxing bedtime read.
We just finished watching “Your Honor”.
  5. What is your go to lazy dinner option?
    Hot dogs.
  6. Baseball players have a “walk up” song that is played when they come to the plate – what would your “walk up” song be when you enter a room?
Emilia: “Brick House” by the Commodores.
Chris: “When I Paint My Masterpiece” by The Band.
  7. What are you most grateful for?
I recently read a poster reminding its readers to be thankful for the nights that turned to mornings, the friends that turned to family and the dreams that became real. We are grateful for all these things, but most of all, our children and each other, our continued health, and all the joys the kids bring to our days.
Carrie and Geoff Colla: Parents of Fifth Grade Student, Blake, Second Grade Student Juliet, and Pre-K Student, Chloe.
  1. How long have you been a Crossroads family and what brought you here?
We started this September. We were looking for a combination of a smaller school community/environment during coronavirus and a challenging and engaging academic environment for the kids. While our original impetus for coming to Crossroads was definitely based in-part on the stresses of COVID, we feel fortunate to have made the change as Crossroads has more than met our expectations.
  2. What have you enjoyed most about the Crossroads community?
Well, we haven’t had the usual opportunity to get to know the Crossroads community this year, but we’ve enjoyed hearing about classmates and we feel so fortunate to have our kids learn with their awesome teachers! It has also been really fun to see people from Crossroads in other parts of our lives and to reconnect with Crossroads families who we have known in the past, but haven’t seen for a while.
  3. With which historical figure/celebrity would you most enjoy being stuck on a ski lift?
Potentially Lyndon Johnson. He was both well known as a great storyteller and would also make sure we got out of there (he could be quite demanding). His reputation for candor and colorful language would at least keep a fraught situation interesting and maybe even entertaining.
  4. What was the last book you finished reading? Last movie you watched? Last show you binged?
    Book: The Vanishing Half.
    Movie:  Big Miracle (with kids)
Show: Call My Agent! (without kids)
  5. What is your go to lazy dinner option?
Chinese Chicken and Broccoli (https://www.simplywhisked.com/chinese-chicken-and-broccoli/).  Everyone seems to love it.
  6. Baseball players have a “walk up” song that is played when they come to the plate. What would your “walk up” song be when you enter a room?
Right now we are all really into “Blinding Lights” by “The Weeknd”.
  7. What are you most grateful for?Family and community – means more to us now than ever! We are also really grateful to live where we do during these challenging times.
Kianny and Keysi: Parents of Fourth Grade Student Mía
  1. How long have you been a Crossroads family and what brought you here?
Kianny: Since 2014! I became a Spanish teacher at Crossroads and after experiencing firsthand the high-quality education, I couldn’t wait for Mía to be old enough to be part of this enchanting family. Crossroads is an amazing community!
Keysi: I suppose I joined the Crossroads family with Kianny, and like her, I was excited at the prospect of having Mía attend there from the start.
  2. What have you enjoyed most about the Crossroads community?
Seeing our daughter run out of the car every morning with a smile on her face and having her complaining at pick-up, because we got there too early! She is having the time of her life, she loves her classes, her classmates, her teachers, her friends, and all the unique academic, extracurricular activities and fun challenges Crossroads offers her. We love seeing her grow happy and emotionally healthy.
  3. With which historical figure/celebrity would you most enjoy being stuck in a ski lift?
Kianny: Well… First things first, I don’t ski –I know, it’s a shame living in the Upper Valley, but my sports inclinations are still in the Caribbean! Having said that, I would love to be stuck in a Ferris wheel with Malala.
Keysi: Like Kianny, I doubt I would ever get stuck in a ski lift; but one never knows… However, if I were to choose the company, I would love to spend time conversing with President Barak Obama.
  4. What was the last book you finished reading? Last movie you watched?  Last show you binged?
Kianny: Book: Soledad, by Angie Cruz / Movie: Finding ‘Ohana / Binged: The Magicians (Netflix)
Keysi: Book: Points of Balance, a poetry collection by Pablo Medina / Movie: The Hate We Give / No binging for me (ever).

Kianny: “No Roots” by Alice Merton.
Keysi: I am most comfortable with the sound of my footsteps, the smile on my face and the eye contact I am able to make with people in the room. And, if music were a requirement, then “I feel good” by James Brown.
  7. What are you most grateful for?
Kianny: Having a family that is always there for me even when the “there” is unclear.
Keysi:  Having people who, along the way, have helped in guiding me.
