The first meeting of The Absolute Zeros (motto: “You can’t get any cooler”), the Crossroads middle school math team, was last week. Fifteen middle school students showed up and went to war against problems from the evil geniuses who write MathCounts problems. What impressed Dr. B the most was the diversity of approaches to each problem and students’ patience in listening to each other.
Competitions this year will include the MathCounts school contest on campus in December, the American Mathematics Competition (AMC8) on campus in late January, the MathCounts chapter contest off campus in early February, the MathCounts state contest (if we qualify) off campus in mid March, and the Intergalactic Tournament of Champions way off campus (if we qualify) in June.
