The Boston Pops “Holiday Pops” on Saturday provided a delightful auditory journey that perfectly captured the spectrum of human experience. The music varied dramatically, from loud, lively, and even chaotic pieces to spiritual and solemn moments of calm. This mirrored medley is so much like our daily lives, particularly during the holidays: a rush of activity, a sudden moment of quiet, the excitement, and the exhaustion. The concert beautifully demonstrated our capacity to shift between these states, ultimately concluding with a powerful, collective moment of peace during the final carol, “Let There Be Peace on Earth.”

As a “Breathe for Change” trained school counselor, I emphasize the power of grounding as a mindful practice. When our lives feel loud or chaotic, grounding techniques help us bring our focus back to the present moment, shifting us from a state of overwhelm to one of calm and clarity. These are simple yet effective tools, such as focusing on the sensation of our feet on the floor, taking three slow, deep breaths, or mindfully noticing five things around us.

The final performance was a gentle reminder that we possess the ability to shift our internal landscape, even when the world around us is bustling. This holiday season, let’s practice these grounding techniques. By doing so, we can find our personal center of peace, reflecting the profound sentiment of that closing song and sharing that calm energy with our school community and families.
