This month's virtue is Courage. Courage is finding the strength to venture and persevere.

Weather Closures and Delays

The safety of our community is paramount in all of the decisions we make. When a storm advisory is posted for our area, we begin to closely monitor weather updates to best gauge the potential impact on school activities. The school considers many factors when making a determination to hold classes or delay or cancel them including road conditions and conditions at the end of the day for pick-up. If there is a question about delay or closure, members of the grounds crew, if able, come to campus by 5:00 a.m. to assess road conditions, clear the paths, and consult with the head of the school and administrative team to make a decision regarding the day. If we delay or cancel school, we send an alert immediately after the decision is made.

We often follow the decision that SAU 70 makes but because SAU 70 uses a private transportation company, has multiple schools under its purview, and because we draw students from a 50-mile radius, we do not always follow what SAU 70 does. Parents should note that if SAU 70 closes and Crossroads does not, the Fresh Picks lunch service is not available and lunch is not delivered.

Dialogue-Based Education at Crossroads Academy

At Crossroads, one of the beneficial skills that our Middle Schoolers bring with them to high school is the ability to analyze complex ideas through rigorous and thoughtful dialogue. The method that these students develop this skill is through numerous Socratic seminars. As is the case with our Core Knowledge sequence, what is learned and perfected in middle school is introduced to our youngest students in lower school. This fall, our second grade students have been building on their skills that will later guide them towards a successful and meaningful dialogue in middle school and beyond.

Sixth Grade Science Lab

While learning about Newton's Laws, the sixth graders examined how the mass of a toy car affected the force it exerted on a block. Students rolled a toy car down a ramp with and without added weight, and carefully measured the distance the car pushed a wooden block. The data they collected helped them to fully understand the relationship between mass and force that is represented in Newton's second law, F=MxA.

Creative Writing Club

Now Accepting Fourth and Fifth Graders

The Creative Writing club will meet on Tuesdays, from January 17 to March 21, from 3:00-4:00 p.m. Students in grades four through eight are now welcome!

This club will be a place where young writers can hone their craft. We will begin every meeting by looking at a piece of writing for either discussion or inspiration. Then, we will dedicate a solid block of time to put pencil to paper. After, we will hold a short writers workshop to share with each other or have optional conferencing time for edits and encouragement. Writers can focus on any genre of writing.

Students on the Ice

The Hanover Wild Travel Mites Team played an intra-team scrimmage in TD Garden before the Boston Bruins game on Sunday. On the ice were second graders Elle Warrington and Owen Draper, and third grader Luke Knuuti. Their parents were excited to coach from the bench.  After the game, the kids were able to meet Pavel Zacha, a center for the Bruins. After their own game, the kids stayed to watch the Bruins defeat the Sharks 4-0. A great time was had by all!
