October 24, 2022

This month's virtues are Hope, Joy, and Wonder. Hope is finding the light in the darkness and trusting in right endings. Joy is the fullness of spirit that blooms from the loving heart. Wonder is to stop and say, "Wow!"

Student Portraits are Ready!

Thank you so much for your cooperation in having your child ready for their portrait day. Please visit the link below to download photos at no cost or purchase prints and/or keepsakes directly from the site. Proceeds from each print are directed to the Crossroads Fund and benefit our teachers, students, and program. When ordering prints, be sure to check the automatic cropping that varies with different print sizes. If you wish to schedule a retake, please email Erin Drury and advise what can be improved in a new photo.

World Language Updates

Because students attend a language class every day, their understanding of worldly cultures, history, current events, traditions, and of course the language itself, are fully integrated with the rest of their Core Knowledge units throughout the school year. Take a look at what our Spanish and French classes are working on this fall!

Seeking "Real Math" Experts!

Do you work in a math or engineering field? Would you consider presenting your work to students in the middle school? It would benefit our students greatly to hear directly from real people who are doing real world math and engineering. Please contact Ms. Squire if you'd like to share!

A Trip to the Lab

Second grade's next science unit focuses on the basics of plant and animal cells and then biological taxonomic hierarchy and the human digestive system. Last Thursday, the second graders traveled to the Life Sciences Center at Dartmouth. They enjoyed having their own microscopes to use to see lots of everyday objects up close. They also looked at pond water, à la Anton Leeuwenhoek (the Father of Microbiology), and were interested in the microorganisms they discovered. We are grateful to Nicholas Sylvain of the microscopy lab for setting up this field trip for our students.

Middle School Musical Poster Contest

Crossroads sixth through eighth graders were invited to participate in a poster contest for our upcoming musical, Matilda Jr. Please join us in congratulating Anna for achieving third place, Coraline Mann for second place, and Aleksandra Prosser for winning first place! All of the poster submissions were examples of beautiful creativity, and we look forward to a fantastic performance in the spring! Please mark your calendar for our March 9, 10, and 11 performance dates.

Students Past and Present Published in Young Writer's Project

Several Crossroads Academy alumni and one current student were recently published in Anthology 13 of Young Writers Project. Please join us in congratulating Eden Anne Bauer '18, Amica Lansigan '20, Emilia Williams '21, and Ellicott Smith '23 for their creativity and courage to share their art with the world.

Student Service Project: Cream for a Cause

Seventh grade sisters, Lidia and Simone Rosenbloom have recently started Cream for a Cause as a mitzvah project to help protect endangered animals. All of the profits are donated to World Wildlife Fund designated to a specific animal corresponding to the ice cream. The ice cream ingredients are mostly organic, the spoons are compostable made of wood, and the jars are reusable. We love to see such thoughtfulness and empathy being showcased out in the world. Way to go, Lidia and Simone! Click here if you would like to participate in Cream for a Cause.

Children who have completed the primary vaccine series are eligible for the Bivalent booster, so long as it has been at least two months since their last COVID vaccine, and at least three months since any potential recent COVID infection. Appointments can be made on the myDH app or by calling (603) 650-1818.

Native American History Speaker

Northern Woodlands, led by Crossroads parent Elise Tillinghast, is hosting a free talk by Professor Robert Goodby, author of A Deep Presence: 13,000 Years of Native American History, on November 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the Lyme Congregational Church. The focus of the talk is the 2009 discovery of a 12,000 archaeological site discovered in Keene, NH, and what artifacts recovered from that site reveals about life here at that time. Students who have an interest in Native American history may be interested in listening to this very engaging speaker.
