SCIENCE
STATEMENT Philosophy: Science education at Crossroads Academy will develop in all students a foundation in scientific concepts and principles and the ability to view the world scientifically through observation, experimentation, and analysis of natural and physical phenomena. Guiding Principles: Science is a systematic discipline that gives direction to students' natural curiosity to know about and understand the world. At Crossroads, students learn and apply the scientific method of inquiry using observation, classification, and experimentation as the basis for drawing conclusions. Students develop analytical and critical thinking skills as they build on their understanding of scientific principles. They explore a rich body of scientific knowledge through topics in the physical, life, and earth sciences. Students in the younger grades practice observation, classification, and documentation skills with projects, demonstrations, and simple experiments that reinforce the body of content studied in each grade. In the upper grades, students perform experiments that illustrate the concepts and principles studied in each unit. They document their experimentation in lab reports that require them to state a hypothesis, describe the procedure, organize and illustrate data, and draw a conclusion. The skills and concepts developed in these activities help students gain an understanding of the purpose as well as the scope of scientific inquiry. |
