PHYSICAL EDUCATION STATEMENT
CROSSROADS ACADEMY
November, 2001

Philosophy: Physical education at Crossroads Academy employs a developmentally appropriate program that enables all students to develop the skills and awareness necessary for pursuing a physically active lifestyle.

Guiding Principles: Physical education encompasses proficiency in movement, development of motor skills, health benefits from physical activity, and responsible social interaction. The physical education program at Crossroads provides a sequenced progression of skills development through individual, partner, and team activities. The program provides for a variety of student interests and abilities. In individual and partner activities, students are encouraged to try their best to reach their greatest potential. These activities particularly help students build skills for an ongoing active lifestyle. Students also have fitness testing two times per year, beginning in third grade. In team activities, students develop a thorough understanding of the rules and strategies of many games. They learn these games and practice the skills required in a variety of activities before they apply them in the actual game setting. Students develop positive interpersonal behaviors, such as cooperation, respect for others, and sportsmanship throughout the program.
