STATEMENT
CROSSROADS ACADEMY

Philosophy
Mathematics education at Crossroads Academy will contain a developmentally
appropriate curriculum that enables all students to be actively involved
in successful learning experiences and develop a solid foundation on
which to build.
Guiding
Principles
Mathematics is among the most cumulative of academic areas. The learner
must constantly integrate new and more sophisticated skills and concepts
into a network of math knowledge. In order for students to progress
to more complex mathematical tasks, a portion of math knowledge must
be memorized. As basic abilities (such as producing addition and subtraction
facts) become automatic, the learner is able to operate more effectively
on higher mathematical levels. To progress along the continuum of mathematical
learning students must develop a deep understanding of math, allowing
them to be both systematic in their approach to problems, and flexible
in their use of strategies.
Implementation
Plan
At Crossroads we recognize that students learn at different rates and
in different ways. We can best serve students who work proficiently
on grade level, or one year ahead (in our chosen curriculum). Students
who fall outside this range may require other support or stimulation
provided by resources outside of the school. We strive to have all on-grade-level
8th grade students complete at least Algebra I; others may
go further.
