HISTORY STATEMENT
CROSSROADS ACADEMY
October, 2001

Philosophy: History education at Crossroads Academy will develop in all students the ability to view the present and future in light of an informed understanding of the past through the study of world and American history.

Guiding Principles: History is an integrative discipline, presenting and reconciling many kinds of human expression and experience. The study of history engages students in the exploration of disciplines including, geography, politics, economics, science, religion, and the arts. At Crossroads, students develop the ability to think historically by studying thoughtfully sequenced content from ancient through modern world and American history. They become familiar with the people, events, and ideas that produced change in cultures and civilizations, and they develop the ability to understand historical precedents for current events. Students pursue this historical understanding and cultivate critical thinking skills by using texts, maps, eyewitness accounts, and analyses. Through these materials of history they also gain an understanding of how historical events may be interpreted in various ways when considered from different perspectives. In the younger grades, students engage in creative projects and dramatic presentations that complement the units they study and make history come alive. Older students participate in analytical writing, research, debates, and presentations to develop and clearly demonstrate their understanding of specific topics as well as the complex contexts of historical events.
