When my family and I began the search for a school we could embrace and support in the coming years, we created a list of ideal qualities: a warm and nurturing environment, a place that knew its values and embraced high standards, a school that had a strong programmatic foundation but remained open to mission-appropriate innovation, a location that attracted a vibrant, diverse community where a wide variety of perspectives were valued, and a school that fostered meaningful intellectual and moral pursuits that helped children reach their full potential. But our eight-year-old daughter, Thea, put it most succinctly. She wanted to find a school, she said, “Where people are really nice, there’s a lot of learning and we can make amazing friends.” Without knowing it then, she quite aptly captured the essence of Crossroads.

Our search took us across the country and the globe, but I am incredibly happy to say we found these qualities in an environment that is both familiar and new. As a New Hampshire native who grew up and attended high school in the southern part of the State, I know Hanover and Lyme, but we are all very excited to have the chance to live in the beautiful Upper Valley for the first time. Even more, we are thrilled to be joining the Crossroads community at a time when we can help sustain and extend the school’s important work of cultivating a love of learning within every student.

I am both humbled and delighted to be recommended by the Search Committee and to be appointed by your Board of Trustees to be the next Head of School. To follow Jean Behnke’s strong leadership at this meaningful point of the school’s history is truly an honor. I’d like to thank Jean, the Board, the members of the Search and Advisory Committees, the faculty and staff, parents and others who actively participated in the search process and whose involvement at the school is so vital. And I’d like to thank all of you who made my family and me feel so welcome during our visits to Crossroads; you were excellent ambassadors and your obvious enthusiasm for your community proved compelling.

As the school celebrates its many achievements during Jean’s tenure and looks ahead toward its 25th anniversary, Crossroads is balanced at a particularly exciting moment in its history. With its dual emphasis on Core Knowledge and Core Virtue, the school is developing the kind of minds and hearts that the 21st century requires. And we are also at a point where thoughtful and strategic innovation can help ensure the school’s future success as we meet today’s needs of the children and families of the Upper Valley.

During these months of transition, I invite you all to be in touch with me to share your hopes for Crossroads so that I might know and understand our school better and begin to live its mission to the best of my ability. My family, Charlotte, Toby, Thea and Isaiah join me in thanking you for this remarkable opportunity. We all look forward to meeting you in the coming year and to working together to help shape and nurture Crossroads Academy. Again, thank you for this honor and for this chance to lead Crossroads forward.

Yours truly,
Brad
