Dear Members of the Crossroads Community,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and our Head of School Search Committee, it is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of Brad Choyt as Crossroads Academy’s next Head of School. The Board was unanimous in its support of the Search Committee’s enthusiastic recommendation of Brad based on an extensive and highly competitive eight-month search process. His term will begin on July 1, 2015.

Brad has more than two decades of experience as an educator, administrator, and leader of independent schools. Throughout his career, Brad has demonstrated a commitment to fostering learning environments for children that promote both intellectual inquiry and character development – the very values embodied in Crossroads’ commitment to Core Knowledge and Core Virtues. He has an established record of leading schools, including serving for two years as founding head of Green School in Bali, Indonesia. He was most recently the Head of School at North Yarmouth Academy in Yarmouth, Maine. There he significantly increased enrollment and annual giving while simultaneously undertaking a number of impressive strategic and educational initiatives including opening a new Lower School and launching a successful summer program for the surrounding local community.

Brad is a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, and earned his undergraduate degree at Brown University with majors in Studio Art, Religious Studies, and Art History. He holds an M.F.A. from the University of Pennsylvania. A native of Bedford, New Hampshire, Brad has lived and studied in Israel, Indonesia, India, Nepal, and Tibet during the course of his career. He and his family are looking forward to returning to New Hampshire and settling in the Upper Valley.

The Board was particularly impressed by Brad’s combination of vision, intelligence, thoughtfulness, energy, and dedication to the intellectual and character development of children. Brad is ready and eager to build on the solid and successful base of all that Jean Behnke has accomplished during her thirteen years as Head of School. We all look forward to a great future for Crossroads under Brad’s leadership.

I would like to acknowledge the tireless efforts of the Search Committee—Alex Gray (co-chair), Kate Harrison (co-chair), David Kotz, Laurel Mackin, Lisa Phipps, and Margaret Rightmire—in conducting this search, and those of our dedicated Advisory Committee. The Advisory Committee consisted of thirteen parents, faculty, and staff, chaired by Jake Reder. And I particularly want to thank all of the students, faculty, staff, and parents who provided such thorough feedback during the search process. Your observations were keen, insightful, and of extraordinary value in our decision.

I hope you will all take a moment to read Brad’s note of introduction found here. Over the coming months, we will keep you informed of events to both honor Jean and introduce Brad. Please join me in welcoming Brad and his wife, Charlotte Bacon, as well as their children Toby (14), Thea (8), and Isaiah (4), to the Upper Valley and the Crossroads communities.

Sincerely,

Sean M. Gorman
President, Board of Trustees
